In a major move to strengthen its global financial operations, Hut 8 Corp. (Nasdaq | TSX: HUT), a leading player in digital infrastructure and computing for high-powered applications like Bitcoin mining and AI, has announced that its subsidiary, Hut 8 Investment Ltd, has obtained a Commercial Licence from the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).

This new licence allows the company to make proprietary investments and conduct select commercial activities under DIFC’s well-regarded common law legal structure a jurisdiction known for fostering digital finance innovation.

“This licence gives us the tools to manage capital more strategically while expanding our access to global institutions,” said Asher Genoot, CEO of Hut 8. “It’s a critical step toward improving efficiency, controlling risk, and generating stronger returns from our digital asset reserves.”

A Strategic Financial Shift

The licence reflects a broader evolution of Hut 8’s financial strategy. By establishing a base in Dubai’s financial hub, the company plans to actively manage its Bitcoin reserves through structured derivative products an area it has already seen strong returns in. In 2024, Hut 8 earned more than $20 million in net revenue by selling covered call options tied to its Bitcoin holdings.

Now, with access to DIFC’s infrastructure, the company expects to unlock new advantages:

  • Direct Trading Access – Enables Hut 8 to trade on institutional-grade exchanges, eliminating intermediaries and reducing trading costs once as high as 10% above spot prices.
  • Expanded Institutional Network – Connects the firm to a broader pool of global financial partners and products, increasing flexibility and liquidity.
  • More Control Over Strategy Design – The licence provides the freedom to build and manage complex yield-generating strategies that are difficult to execute elsewhere.
  • Legal and Regulatory Certainty – Operating under DIFC’s framework gives Hut 8 a strong legal foundation for digital asset activity, supporting compliance and cross-border confidence.

Scaling Infrastructure for a Digital Future

Hut 8’s core business focuses on large-scale integration of energy, computing, and infrastructure to support data-intensive technologies such as blockchain networks and artificial intelligence. The Dubai licence is seen as a vital part of its broader transformation from a Bitcoin mining firm into a sophisticated energy and digital infrastructure platform.

“By combining our operational expertise with the regulatory clarity offered by the DIFC, we can be more agile in how we manage assets, reduce exposure, and maximise long-term value,” Genoot added.

As the company continues to build its presence in global markets, the DIFC approval marks a significant step in Hut 8’s goal to lead in both the digital asset and institutional finance sectors.
